Strategy, Structure, and Organizational Performance

Abstract
Since the work of Chandler(1962), the relationship between strategy and structure. has been the subject of a number of conceptual and empirical studies.
The intention has been either to show the direct or indirect links from strategy to structure Direct links are where structure can be explained by the nature and diversity of,products and markets: of the organization.
This article focuses on the direct links between strategy and structure.
In the first section, the relation between strategy and structure is examined.
The work in that area generally confirms the Chandler¢¥s thesis that structure follows
results in failure.
Oneof -the major studies conducted to test this proposition(Rumelt, 1974) indicates equivocal results in terms of profitability criteria.
The theory cannot be totally rejected on empirical grounds, but neither can be r, ccepted. at least as of the present time.
In the last, some thoughts are given to the f ure research direc ons in th ,tratcp stru cture organizational performance relations.
